It was Georges Bataille, writing in a catalogue essay for the 1947 exhibition La Surréalisme at the Galerie Maeght in Paris, who noted that "the absence of myth is also a myth." It implied , he believed, a breakdown of communication, a breakdown of society's own self-understanding. It was perhaps "the only true myth."
